    Takeoff roll only 30 seconds - what an airplane!

    • @kaeptnbaloo
      @kaeptnbaloo 9 месяцев назад +1

      A scheduled block time of about 02:50 isn't very much for a 777. So I suspect the tanks were not even a third full, which of course saves a lot of weight.

    • @Michael-db4sn
      @Michael-db4sn 5 месяцев назад +1

      Miami to Los Angeles doesn't utilize much of a 777's range so the fuel tanks were definitely less than 50% full

      "only" 30 seconds for a 3 hour flight? The 747 does it in 15 seconds.

    As a Miami citizen I just say that this is one of my favorite routes. I love shorter flight but bigger aircraft and this is just perfect. Those GE90s had an amazing sound!

    • @sla31
      @sla31  7 месяцев назад

      I agree. I love flying on shorter domestic flights on wide bodies. Unfortunately, American has pretty much gotten rid of all of their domestic wide body flights. Many of which were from/to Miami. So I guess it's a good thing we have the videos to go back and watch haha. Thanks for watching!

    • @Michael-db4sn
      @Michael-db4sn 5 месяцев назад

      Economically using wide bodies on domestic flights is inefficient. I flew a 767 between NY and LA and it was fun but the plane was less than half full.

But, I do of course, have ones that I like more. For the legacies, United is my current favorite. I also love Southwest, Alaska and Hawaiian. JetBlue is good too. My current least favorites in the US are Spirit, Frontier, and American.

    Hey Skylite. After watching the abridged version of this video yesterday, I had to rewatch the full length video today. Magnificent aircraft, and oh those roaring GE90s! Thanks! I loved every minute of it. Quick question. As a kid during the late 60s, my family and I would often fly down to Miami from JFK. As I remember, all of those flights southbound took us well out over the ocean, in contrast to your flight. What routing has been your experience more often when flying southbound out of the northeast, to stay inland or over water?
    BTW, it was 17 degrees here in NJ yesterday. Watching this video makes me ask myself again, "Why did I move to the northeast and leave south Florida!!" Thanks again my friend for all your hard work. Be well. Stay safe.

    • @sla31
      @sla31  2 года назад +1

      That’s a good question…. I’m trying to remember all the flights I’ve taken up and down the eastern US, and frankly I’m having a hard time remembering any flight down the east coast where we were out over the ocean for an extended period of time. Now, some of that might have to do with the aircraft and whether or not it is ETOPS certified. Which is what governs how far a plane can fly over water without having an airport nearby to divert to if necessary. But, even if you were going from Maine to Miami, I don’t know that you’d ever the far enough away from land for that to really apply. I’d have to do more research and digging to figure that out. There are different levels of ETOPS certifications. Regardless, that wouldn’t apply in this situation. The 777 here is definitely ETOPS rated for some of the longest flights in American’s network, so keeping everyone closer to the coast may just be the way they do it now. Anyway, it’s been super cold here too. A couple of days in the single digits, one day below zero. Had a pipe freeze 🥶. At least it didn’t break. As always, thanks for watching my friend! Stay warm!

    Of course, another great flight. The only weird thing I've noticed is when you place the phone in the window, it does dim the audio a bit, but that can be an advantage when you have loudly-talking folks near by. I get it. Whenever you bring the phone out, though, I hear everything equally in both ears, because the window seems to slightly mute the right speaker of my headset or the left if you're sitting on the left aisle. I can hardly wait for the new 777s and 787s to come out. I really hope they do, too. I'll miss the B747s though.

    You went from New York to Miami? That isn't a long flight and it is saying "3 hours 13 minutes 30 seconds" that you took this video. I am a bit confused. I don't think you need to fly in first class in this one do you? it isn't that long.

    • @sla31
      @sla31  2 года назад

      I list flight times as the total time I spent onboard the aircraft. Not just the time we spent in the air. So the 3 hours 13 minutes includes the all the time on the plane from the time the boarding door was closed until it was opened again. And you're right, for "first class" purposes, this wasn't that long of a flight. But remember, I pay for everything you see on this channel out of my own pocket. And I can't usually afford 10 hour first class flights haha. When American runs these large planes on shorter domestic routes, you can usually get a great deal on a paid upgrade. I was originally in coach on this flight but was offered an upgrade for less than $100. So, I took it, to get this sweet engine view you see here. It's the only way you'll ever get to see this view on my channel as I can't afford to drop $3,000+ for one ticket on a DFW-LHR 773 first class seat haha.

      Well, since I hold the camera by hand for most of my videos, it is always moving just slightly. You can see the movement in the window frame but not the wing/engine simply because the window is so close to the lens. The window frame is right next to the lens so any movement at all is amplified. The wing is so far way that the small movements are noticeable.

      Also interior panels and frames are not really structural and their flexing is not connected to the principal aircraft structure. Similar to the interior paneling in your car.

    Amazing video. But why they are using such a big plane for such a short route?

    • @sla31
      @sla31  2 года назад +2

      It’s very common for US carriers to run their large aircraft on high demand domestic routes. New York to Miami certainly fits that category. On top of that JFK and MIA are both hubs for American. This was a full flight. If demand is there, why not run the big planes. Think of it like this. New York has a metro population of 20,000,000 and Miami had another 7,000,000. That’s 27,000,000 people without connecting passengers going between hubs. That means those two cities have more population than 170ish other countries. Only 50ish countries have more than 27,000,000 people. Anyway, hopeful that helps you see how such a big plane can easily operate on this route. thanks for watching!

    Great video! How do you mount your phone to the window???

    • @sla31
      @sla31  2 года назад +1

      That would be my right hand in this instance, since I was on that side of the plane. I don't use mounts to film as they transfer too many vibrations into the final footage. So, I hold the camera by hand to keep it separated from the plane. Now, there is a caveat. In instances like this, where I'm in a first class seat and holding the camera without a mount would be very uncomfortable, I use a RAM mount like this: rammount.com/collections/phone-mounts-complete-kits/products/ram-b-166-un10u to extend my reach and help me be more comfortable. But, I still hold the mount in my hand and don't attach it to the plane.

    Uhhhhh…
    Why is a 777 being used for a short-haul flight?

    • @sla31
      @sla31  Год назад +3

      There are multiple reasons why US airlines use large wide bodies on shorter flights like this. United even has a whole sub fleet of 20-30 777-200’s specifically configured in a domestic configuration to fly between hubs. So first, since the major US airlines operate with hub and spoke networks, they need to move A LOT of passengers through those hubs. Often times you’ll need to fly hub to hub just to get to a hub where a specific city is served from. So not only do you have the destination traffic, but you also have a lot of people connecting to cities that may only be served by the one hub. Second, they often need to reposition aircraft for international flights. Say the 777 came into JFK from LHR, but its next flight is MIA-FRA. Well they’re not just going to fly the plane empty to MIA. Sometimes they just need to fill the planes time and you might as well fill the seats too. Another reason… Think how big New York and Miami are. Their combined metro populations is 27 million people… That means that just those two cities have more people living in them than 3/4th of the world’s countries. Only 53 countries have more than 27 million people. So the two markets here are huge. That also justifies flying 777’s on the route.
